DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING PERL 6

DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING PERL 6

REVISED: Friday, March 1, 2013

"Perl 6" installation tutorial.

I.  "PERL 6" INTRODUCTION

Perl 6 is a major revision to the Perl 5 programming language. Perl 6 is still in development. Perl 6 is currently being developed by a team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. To find out the current status click the following link for the home page to Perl 6.

I am currently using Rakudo Star the most advanced implementation of Perl 6, on the Parrot Virtual Machine. Rakudo Star is aimed at "early adopters" of Perl 6. "Rakudo" is short for "Rakuda-dō" (with a long 'o'); which is Japanese for "Way of the Camel". A new  Rakudo Perl compiler is released  after the third Tuesday of each month.

II. DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING "PERL 6"

My computer uses Microsoft Windows; therefore, I used "rakudo-star-2012.10.msi — Windows installer for Rakudo Star 2012.10".

When you are writing and reading "Perl 6" files, you will need to know the path your computer used for your "Perl 6" download; e.g.,  C:\rakudo\.

Last of all you must include the install directory in your system PATH variable. For example, go to your control panel and select system. Next, select advanced system settings. Then select environmental variables. Next, select system variables, then select edit, and then select path. Move our cursor to the very end of the path line, type a semicolon ; and then type c:\rakudo\bin\perl6.exe and then keep pressing OK until you exit out of the control panel.

III.  "PERL 6" DOWNLOAD AND INSTALLATION VALIDATION

You might want to create a "Perl 6" shortcut icon on your desktop. On my computer, the path I used was c:\rakudo\bin\perl6.exe, then I selected perl6.exe and right mouse clicked and selected create shortcut. After the shortcut was created I did an Edit cut and cut the shortcut and pasted it to my screen so it would be on my desktop whenever I needed it.

"Double left mouse click" the "Perl 6" icon on your desktop to start the "Perl 6" console and the prompt will appear as shown below:

When you see the above prompt, type the following and press Enter.

> say "Hello, World!";

When you see the following you have successfully downloaded and installed "Perl 6".

> say "Hello, World!";
Hello, World!

IV. FIVE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

In this tutorial, you have learned how to install "Perl 6".
